What is Required to Compose a Winning Personal Statement?

From the moment a candidate is admitted to an institution of higher learning, they are expected to write a personal statement. This is a brief essay that focuses on the candidate’s self-representation. It is a chance for a student to make a compelling argument as to why they are the best candidate to join the learning institution. A superb statement should convince the admission board and the admission committee that the student deserves a chance to attend the institution. Some elements of a good personal statement include:

• Inclusion of relevant course work and extracurricular activities that portray the student as an all-round learner and good time manager.

• Achievements, either academic or work-based, that show the learner’s expertise.

What are the Requirements when Writing?

Like all other academic documents, a personal statement requires the student to adhere to a few rules of writing. Most importantly, one must observe the basic structure of any paper. In this case, the personal statement must have an introduction, body, and conclusion. The body may have as many paragraphs as the length of the paper, yet all must be coherent and have a logic flow.

Introduction

This is the paragraph that introduces the reader to the subject of the personal statement. Like any other academic paper, it should have an opening paragraph that gives an overview of the topic. A strong introduction paragraph must include a:

1. Background of the topic under research.
2. Define the terms „research question“ and explanations of the variables and designs being examined.

Each section should contain its theme, a topic sentence, explaining the idea, and the counter-argument that portrays the other side.  

Conclusion

In this section, you finish off the essay by tying up all the main ideas discussed in the section. Furthermore, you briefly restate the thesis statement to give a brief recap to the reader. Lastly, conclude by highlighting the importance of the topic and the intent to statistics project ideas get the reader’s thought after reading your personal statement.
